The beginning of Golf Road Baptist Church can be traced back to March 23, 1954, where a group of residents met together in a home in Mount Prospect, IL to form a Southern Baptist Church.  This group of people rented some property to hold its first service on Easter Sunday, 1954.  The group began as a mission of Lake Shore Baptist Church and adopted the name Mount Prospect Baptist Chapel.  Waren Alsup was chosen as the first pastor, as he began serving on May 9, 1954.

The congregation move on April 3, 1955 to Des Plaines, IL and changed its name to First Baptist Church of Des Plaines.  At this time, the church also formed a constitution to move from being a mission church to an independent congregation.  The church began with 27 charter members.  That same year, the church was received into the Great Lakes Baptist Association of the Southern Baptist Convention.  This association covered the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.  The Chicago Metro Baptist Association was formed in September 1957, and our church became one of the original churches to form this association. 

In March 1959, the church moved again to its present location on 2 1/2 acres of land in Des Plaines.  Construction began on the original sanctuary which began being used in late 1960, and was completely finished in 1963.  In 1965, the church began building a parsonage for the pastor, which was completed in 1966.  In 1969, the present sanctuary began being built and the first service was held on June 14, 1970.  On June 16, 1979, the church voted to change its name from First Baptist Church of Des Plaines to its current name of Golf Road Baptist Church.

The church has only had six pastors in its 50 years of existence, with the current Pastor, Rev. Gary D. Houdek, beginning his service in June of 2001.
